In this video lesson, GM Igor Smirnov walks you through a really interesting game played between the former world chess champion Garry Kasparov and a 9-year-old girl Ekaterina Goltseva. It was a simul game played in Moscow, Russia, in the year 2012.

Kasparov was playing White and he went for the Advanced variation in the Caro-Kann Defense 1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.e5. He thought he could outplay his young opponent in positional play, but things didn’t go as expected. The little girl put up a tough fight against Kasparov, found proper and strong defensive moves.

At one point in the middlegame, Kasparov sacrificed an exchange (sacrificed his rook for a bishop), desperately trying to open up the position and attack his opponent, but Goltsev’s strong defense made Kasparov offer a draw.
