In this video lesson, GM Igor Smirnov will show you how to crush your opponents in the Queen’s Pawn Game (1.d4) regardless of what they do, with the same setup. The setup is called Colle–Zukertort System, a variation of the Colle System (also known as the Colle–Koltanowski System), which is a chess opening strategy for White introduced in the 1920s by the Belgian master Edgard Colle. It was then further developed by George Koltanowski.

The strategic idea of this setup is to aim for a kingside attack. White usually tries to put his knight on the strong central e5-square, then push f4, and start to attack on the kingside with ideas like Rf3-Rg3, etc.

The Colle–Zukertort System (named after Johannes Zukertort), characterized by developing the White’s dark-squared bishop on b2. The typical plan is: 1.d4 d5 2.Nf3 e6 3.e3 Nf6 4.Bd3 c5 5.b3 Nc6 6.0-0 Bd6 7.Bb2 0-0, where White eventually plays for a kingside attack.

Watch this video lesson as GM Igor Smirnov shares a couple of instructive games – one where the former world champion Vishy Anand was defenseless as Black against the White’s strong attack, and the other where Vasily Smyslov won against this setup as Black. Therefore, you will learn to play this setup both as White and Black.
