The importance of practical endgame skill ยท Road to GM, Game 168

This game highlights one of my biggest weaknesses – understanding complex practical endgames. They cannot be easily learned from books – they require skill and extensive practice to master.
The only way to get better is to actually play them out over and over until you begin to understand what’s important and why. This game is a great example of how a good endgame player easily beats a bad one.
My opponent won an equal material endgame effortlessly – he kept gaining space, improving his pieces while making mine worse, brought his king in and almost mated me. I resigned instead. At least I know what to work on.
