In this video lesson, the RCA guest coach IM Mat Kolosowski will share with you a couple of interesting tactical ideas that he found when exploring one of the most common lines in the Caro-Kann Defense, which is considered to be one of the most solid openings in chess.Â
The initial moves for these traps are 1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 dxe4 4.Nxe4 and now Black has 3 main possibilities. They are 4…Bf5, 4…Nd7 (played by Anatoly Karpov in his career), and the immediate 4…Nf6 which is what we’re going to see in this video lesson.
Black has a clear intention of exchanging the knights. But White can set the trap by playing 5.Qd3, which is justified both strategically and tactically. Â
