The Tarrasch is a great weapon against the French Defense, and most people don’t know how to deal with it well.

Still, even though black can be put on the back foot, there are rare lines black can use to surprise white. My opponent played one of them in this game, the early Be7.

I played ok, and I got out of the opening with a slight edge, but I failed to enter into known positions and I got an IQP position with the queens off, which is not a good thing when you have the isolated pawn as you are trying to play for activity and to attack.
