Magnus Carlsen is probably the greatest endgame player of all time. His ability to plan, calculate, and never give up makes most positions impossible for his opponents to hold.

Magnus Carlsen’s endgame technique is probably what he is most famous for. He is known for squeezing wins from drawn positions relentlessly and with such precision that not even the 2800 players can deal with him sometimes.

He also never gives up. Even if it is an objectively drawn position, he will still try to complicate it and gain a slight edge which he will then try to convert.

I have chosen three games from the early stages of his career, before he became the World Champion. I hope you find them instructive!

Games selected:
02:00 John Nunn – Magnus Carlsen, Youth – Experience 2006
15:45 Shakhriyar Mamedyarov – Magnus Carlsen, Wijk 2008
28:43 Magnus Carlsen – Vassily Ivanchuk, Bazna 2011
