This match between Anatoly Karpov and Viktor Korchnoi in effect became a World Championship when Robert James Fischer did not defend his World Champion title the next year.
Karpov qualified from the Karpov – Spassky Candidates Semifinal (1974), and Korchnoi qualified from the Korchnoi – Petrosian Candidates Semifinal (1974).
