Anatole Parnas – Mikhail Tal, Riga 1949
Closed Ruy Lopez, Yates Variation (d4)

This game was a strategic and theoretical battle which had, unfortunately for Talโ€™s opponent, ended with one horrible blunder which lost material. Had he not missed Talโ€™s move, he would have had a very pleasant position.

Strategically, Tal made a serious mistake. He maneuvered his knight to a5, an idea common in the Ruy Lopez, but he did it in a moment in which white could have embarrassed the knight and kept it locked on the side of the board. Unsound sacrifices were his trademarks. He lost the strategic mistakes later on in his career.
