In this week’s middlegame video I have decided to share my favorite method to measure my progress and to test my current skill level – a very hard, time consuming, and highly effective chess test!
Here is what you have to do:
Take any random 100 games. The easiest way to select them is to go to chessgames and select a tournament. You will be solving all the games set to move 20 for white, and you will use a chess clock to time your solving.
The test has 5 parts. Before you start you should write
down your battleplan for each stage. It helps to verbalize yor
thoughts, and it will also help you improve on your thinking method.
1. The 30 second stage – go over each position using only 30
seconds on the clock. The idea of this part is to test your intuition.
2. The 3 minute stage – go over each position using 3 minutes. The
idea of this part is to speed up your positional and strategic understanding
and to pinpoint the patterns you are not familiar with.
3. The 10 minute stage. Here the goal is to see how far you can get
with wnough time to understand the whole position.
4. Analyze with an engine. Write down the 3 top choices by the engine.
5. Verbalize your mistakes and your thought process.
