To continue the series on chess middlegames, I have covered a very important positional motif – hanging pawns.

Hanging pawns is a term for a pawn duo on the c and d files when there are no pawns on adjacent files.

They are strong and weak at the same time, depending on the other features of the position. The side with the hanging pawns has a long term structural weakness, and will play for the initiative and an attack, while the side playing against it will either try to attack and win one of the pawns, or undermine them, forcing them forward and inducing weaknesses.

I have chosen two very famous games. One in which hanging pawns will brilliantly, and one in which they lose horribly. I hope that will give you a basic idea on how to play with and against hanging pawns.
