In this video, GM Igor Smirnov analyzes one of the most astonishing games he has ever seen – it’s the game played by the Magician from Riga, Mikhail Tal. He played this game as Black against the German strong grandmaster Lutz Espig in the year 1982.

What’s really cool about this game is that towards the end of the game, Tal almost checkmated his opponent with his King. Even though it’s technically impossible to do so, almost illegal, but that’s what happened in the game. And perhaps that is why we all love him so much because so often he found some crazy ways to finish off his opponents.

But how exactly did he checkmate his opponent with his King? Well, of course not literally, but he maneuvered his King from c8 all the way to White King’s territory, to the b3 square, because White was constantly giving check to the Black’s King, which helped Tal take his King to a long walk.
