In this video lesson, Aggelos Kesaris analyses the game played between the World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen and Boris Savchenko in the World Rapid Chess Championship 2019.
Savchenko sacrificed a pawn in the opening to gain initiative and he was ahead in development. While because of that, Carlsen actually had a pair of outside connected passed pawns on his queenside. Nevertheless, it was difficult for Carlsen to push them together, so he eventually had to give up the extra pawn he had, leaving him with only one outside passed pawn on the queenside.
Few moves later, Carlsen forced an exchange of the only pair of minor pieces taking the game to a rook and pawn endgame on his favour. It was a tense rapid game and Carlsen found a way to create a passed pawn out of a sudden on the kingside, after sacrificing his outside passed pawn on the queenside. And in the end when Savchenko made a mistake, Carlsen took the chance and won the game.
