The French Defense 1.e4 e6 is a very solid chess opening for Black. The Winawer variation following the moves 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 Bb4 is named after Szymon Winawer and pioneered by Aron Nimzowitsch and Mikhail Botvinnik, is one of the main systems in the French Defense.

In this variation, Black is tries to immediately attack the White’s knight on c3, therefore putting more pressure on the e4-pawn, trying to force White either to play 4.exd5 or 4.e5. In the latter case, White will fix the pawns in the center which will allow Black to counter-attack with 4…c5. So what can White do about it?

After the White’s move 4.Nge2, we enter the Alekhine Gambit, named after Alexander Alekhine, also called as the Maroczy Gambit, because after 4…dxe4 5.a3 Bxc3 6.Nxc3 Black tries to support that e4-pawn, and even though White is a pawn down he has the initiative and has great attacking opportunities.
