The FIDE Chess.com Grand Swiss is an 11-round Swiss tournament taking place from 10-21 October 2019 in the COMIS Hotel and Golf Resort in Douglas, Isle of Man. The winner qualifies for the 2020 Candidates Tournament, with no playoff in case of a tie for first place. The 100 highest rated players from July 2018-June 2019 were invited as well as 17 who qualified through various competitions (3.1 B-H) and wildcards.
Players receive 100 minutes for 40 moves, followed by 50 minutes for 20 moves, then 15 minutes to the end of the game, plus a 30-second increment starting from move one. The total prize fund for the Grand Swiss is $432,500, with $70,000 for first place. Official website: iominternationalchess.com
The 2019 FIDE World Cup is taking place in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia from 10 September to 4 October. The 128-player knockout tournament features most of the world’s best players. The total prize fund is $1.6 million, with $110,000 for the winner and $6,000 for first round losers. The finalists will qualify for the 2020 Candidates Tournament that determines Magnus Carlsen’s next World Championship challenger.
The format is six knockout rounds of 2-game classical matches before a 4-game final. The time control is 90 minutes for 40 moves, then 30 minutes for the rest of the game, with a 30-second increment from move 1. If the score is tied the players then play two 25-minute + 10-second increment rapid games, then two 10+10 games, then two 5+3 and, finally, Armageddon, where White has 5 minutes to Black’s 4 but a draw qualifies Black for the next round.
