Tigran Petrosian’s beautiful attacking game in the Torre Attack.
Most people consider Petrosian to be a defensive player. He is considered to be one of the best defenders in the history of chess, in fact. But, sometimes he played extremely aggressively. He sometimes played to win at all costs. Especially against players below his level who he was expected to beat easily.
This is one of those games. He played attacking chess, and he didn’t play prophylactic moves. He played attacking moves even though he must have known they were less than ideal and not perfectly precise.
He played Victor Liublinsky, obviously his inferior at the time. He chose the aggressive Torre attack and went for a quick kingside attack.
He maneuvered all of his pieces towards black’s king and didn’t stop until his opponent resigned. Now, about his precision… It was far from perfect. In fact, black had a chance to get a much better position, even winning at one point. But that’s the beauty of human chess. It’s hard to defend! Petrosian played for activity, and his opponent couldn’t cope with the pressure.
The game was finished with a wonderful clearance pawn sacrifice and an unstoppable checkmate threat!
