“Chess is a terrible game. If you have no center, your opponent has a freer position. If you do have a center, then you really have something to worry about!”, said Siegbert Tarrasch. In this game Black sacrificed his queen at move 9 after White’s center and king safety had collapsed.

The game was played between Carl Hamppe and Philipp Meitner in Vienna 1870. The Vienna game (1.e4 e5 2.Nc3) was played and Black sacrificed his queen at move 9. The white king took a long walk from e1 to c6 via d3, c3, b3, a4, and so on. The game ended in a draw due to repetition since all other moves were losing to both sides. The game is better known as “The Immortal Draw in Chess”.
