In August 2017, chess fans were very excited when the legend, arguably the greatest player of all time, Garry Kasparov announced that he was coming out of retirement in order to play at the St. Louis Rapid and Blitz tournament.
The scintillating prospect of seeing the former World Chess Champion in action again, against the top players of the modern era, had people on the edge of their seats. As if Blitz wasn’t exciting and fast enough as it is!
Now the dust has settled, and one year has passed since that exciting tournament. In this video, IM Valeri Lilov looks back at Kasparov’s performance and analyzes two of the games that stood out to him.
The first game he takes a close look at was Kasparov’s game against Dominguez Perez with the Black pieces. Garry managed to block the black squares early on in the game. This idea turned out to be a very successful, and Black’s pieces come to dominate the board bit by bit.
Next up, Valeri shows how Kasparov managed to defeat Hikaru Nakamura with superior technique. This must have been particularly satisfying for Kasparov. A few years earlier, Nakamura brought in Garry Kasparov for some training, hoping to close the gap on Magnus Carlsen. They worked together for about a year but it didn’t end well, with Nakamura not too impressed with Kasparov’s middlegame play.
With Black, Kasparov stuck to his old favorites – the Grunfeld and the Najdorf. With White, he mixed it up and played different things, but one thing was clear: he was in the mood for aggressive, attacking play!
