If you’re looking to spice up your chess and get more wins with Black, there’s an opening that stands out above the rest. A chess opening for warriors, for players who use the board as a battleground, a place for aggressive, sharp play. The Sicilian Dragon is the opening for those who want to take home the spoils. And there’s no better person to teach you how to emerge victorious than American GM Ron W. Henley.

GM Henley, aside from being a strong player in his own right, acted as second, analyst and trainer for former World Chess Champion Anatoly Karpov in many of his matches in the 1990s. Ron also trained 7-time US Women’s Champion, GM Irina Krush.

In this video, an exclusive preview from Ron’s comprehensive Master Method course on the Accelerated Dragon, Ron looks at the history of the Sicilian Dragon and how it has evolved over the years, giving you a great overview of the powerful opening.

If you want to play a new opening, it’s important to study the classics and get some idea of the historical development. “Those that don’t know history are doomed to repeat it.” The history of the Dragon Sicilians goes a long way back.

Simon Winawer (1838 – 1919) was an early successful pioneer of the Accelerated Sicilian Dragon. He introduced some of the recurring tactical patterns in the Dragon – patterns that are still essential to know today.

Emanuel Lasker, the Second World Champion, used to play the Dragon too. His style was based on psychology and defensive prowess. The Dragon formations with their central pawn advantage and counterplay along the half-open c-file and h8-a1 long diagonal really suited his counter-attacking style.

Mikhail Botvinnik was known for his opening preparation. He contributed various ideas to the development of the Accelerated Dragon.

Garry Kasparov was feared for his attacking style and sharp opening preparation. He even played the Dragon in his World Championship Match against Vishy Anand in 1995!

Even today, the Dragon is played regularly by none other than the current World Champion, Magnus Carlsen.
