Ingvar Thor Johannesson (Zibbit) vs Jon Kristinn Thorgeirsson, Catalan, Closed E08
Iceland North Congress 2018, 04/28/18
This is a game played by one of my favorite YouTubers, FM and chess coach Ingvar Johannesson (Zibbit). If you haven’t seen his channel yet, please do. He has an abundance of high quality videos on how to improve your game, as well as many fun-to-watch videos full of chess anecdotes and interesting stories. His analyses are always full of instructive details which most channels (mine included) fail to provide, and his strength often makes the advice given in the videos easily applicable in your own games.

He made a video on the game as well, so make sure to watch his take on the game, with his own thoughts and ideas. Here’s the link:

He played a slightly weaker player (rated 2317) in the Closed Catalan. His opponent got out of theory early on, probably by mistake, and Zibbit got an advantage which wasn’t easy to materialize on. The decisive blunder by black was the strange Ra7??, which simply misplaced the piece and made him waste another tempo to bring it back, as well as making it a tactical liability which would basically cost him the game afterwards.
