How to crush the Scandinavian in 20 moves ⎸Fischer vs Robatsch 1962

Robert James Fischer vs Karl Robatsch, Scandinavian Defense, Ilundain Variation (B01)
1962 Varna Olympiad Finals

Karl Robatsch was one of the best Austrian players in history. He contributed a lot to chess theory and had a great career. Compared to Fischer, though, he was a weak player, which this game proves. He prepared the Scandinavian Defense against Fischer. An opening which is considered slightly dubious for black to start with, but the line he played (with g6, Bg7, 0-0) is definitely just losing. Bobby Fischer’s specialty was breaking up kingside structures with a fianchettoed bishop. He referred to it as “sack, sack, mate”. He would simply push his pawns up the board, weaken the structure and checkmate. That’s exactly what happened in this game. At move 10 he was winning!

His plan was so simple and effective that there was nothing Robatsch could do about it. He simply sat and watched his kingside get destroyed and his king getting killed.
