Who will win the World Chess Championship 2018? It is surely going to be an epic and close battle between Magnus Carlsen and Fabiano Caruana. Will Carlsen retain the title, or can Caruana pry it away from him? The general feeling seems to be that if anyone can do it, it’ll be Caruana. GM Damian Lemos thinks that it is too close to pick a winner, as close to 50/50 as you can get.
We all know how good a player Magnus Carlsen is – he is the current champion, and the greatest player of recent history, if not all time. Time and time again, he has shown why he’s the highest rated player in the world and the current champion, holding the title uninterrupted since his famous victory over Vishy Anand in 2013.
On the flip side, Fabiano Caruana has been consistently improving over the past few years, getting better and better and having some impressive tournament victories along the away. He narrowly missed out on a World Chess Championship match in 2016, but this time he blew the opposition away in the Candidates with a simply outstanding performance.
Shortly after, Caruana also won the GRENKE Chess Classic 2018 outright – an entire point ahead of Magnus Carlsen.
The World Chess Championship should have ome solid and entertaining games, where the players will pitch their strengths against each other. it is Caruana who has the stronger opening preparation of the two. In openings with theory battles, Carlsen regularly chooses the quiet lines, but Caruana confidently selects sharp variations. In the middlegame, these players are evenly matched. As for Carlsen, he is a positional expert who can press home even a slight advantage once he enters the endgame.
In this video, GM Damian Lemos analyses a game between the two great players from Biel, 2011, in order to see how they face off against each other and to see the sort of thing we may see come the World Chess Championship match in November. In this game, Carlsen plays a Scotch, an opening with less theory than, say, the Ruy Lopez, but is still solid for both sides.
