I defeated myself this game ⎸Road to GM

A slight edge in an attacking position ruined because of cowardly play and lack of proper planning in the middlegame.

Zdenko Nesek vs Stjepan Tomic, Queen’s Pawn Game, Torre Attack (E03)
5th Croatian League, 04/08/18

I played an opponent rated 2014 (around 240 ELO points higher rated than me) on board one. I got to replace one of my teammates so I played on a higher board than usual. I couldn’t prepare for my opponent because he had no games online, so I had to do with two games from ten years ago which my friend played against him. And what’s worse the only thing I knew was that he played 1.d4 and 2.Nf3 as a response to 1…d5. Not much to go with.

We entered a Torre Attack and I had a slightly more active position out of the opening. In a crucial position I spent around 30 minutes on one move and came up with a plan which is so passive and inaccurate that it ended up costing me the game.

I hope you can learn something from my mistakes in this game, as it’s more useful to look at games of someone closer to your strength. This is the second game I covered on the channel, and I will be covering every single official tournament game I play, whether it’s a win, draw or a loss. Cheers!
