Caruana and Grischuk battle in a King’s Indian – Benoni hybrid ⎸2018 Candidates, Round 6

Fabiano Caruana – Alexander Grischuk, King’s Indian Defense, Normal, E60
2018 World Chess Candidates Tournament, Round 6

Fabiano Caruana was in first place before the game (with 3.5/5) and he must have wanted to have a fighting game which could bring him victory against Alexander Grischuk (who was at 2.5/5). They entered a starting position of the King’s Indian Defense when Caruana decided to deviate with 4.e3, and after a few moves force Grischuk to strike with c5 which led to a transposition to a Modern Benoni – King’s Indian hybrid.

The game was very thematic for the opening, and both sides made positional improvements until Caruana got a chance to gain the initiative. Once he got it he failed to convert it! He let the victory slip with a repetition leading to a draw in a position in which he had more than +1.2!

With this win Caruana is now still in first place in the Candidates Tournament, and Grischuk is in third.
