Sergey Karjakin vs Levon Aronian, QGD, Ragozin, Vienna Variation, D39
2018 Chess Candidates Tournament
Karjakin went into round 4 with only 1/3, drawing two games and losing one, while Aronian had 2/3. Both players needed a win badly in order to get close to the leaders and stand a chance to win, as second place is as good as nothing at the candidates. Only the winner gets to challenge Magnus Carlsen for the title.
They opened with a weird queen’s gambit declined, and then entered the sharp, highly theoretical Vienna Variation of the Ragozin in which a single mistake can cost you the game….and Sergey made the first one.
