Vladimir Kramnik, who is the wild card at the 2018 Candidates Tournament (meaning he was elected to play by the organiser), the oldest of all eight players, and the only former world champion in the group, was not given much chance before the tournament, but his round 1 game against Alexander Grischuk will have proven many people wrong.

He played a marvelous game in the King’s Indian, won an exchange and then converted into an easily winning endgame by giving back material. He is definitely still a force to be reckoned with!
