Kramnik plays his signature Berlin Defense against Karjakin ⎸2018 Candidates Rd.2

Round 2 of the 2018 Candidates Tournament didn’t bring as much excitement as the first round, and players took far less risks.

This game was played between Vladimir Kramnik, the tournament wild card, who got off to a great start yesterday by defeating Alexander Grischuk, and the former challenger for the world championship title, Sergey Karjakin.

It was the “Berlin endgame”, which Kramnik had so successfully employed against Kasparov in their battle for the world champion. A somewhat dull opening which many caonsider “overanalyzed” to be exciting.
