2018 Chess Candidates Tournament has put together eight of the best to compete to challenge Magnus Carlsen for the world champion. All players have advantages and disadvantages but Alexander Grischuk, who many consider the most imaginative player in the top 20, and Wesley So, who’s had a less than ideal last year are a recipe for an exciting attacking game!
Both players suffered defeats yeterday. Grischuk lost to the wild card, Kramnik, who got his first point in style, while Wesley was defeated in the clash of the Americans by Fabiano Caruana.
This game was a seemingly passive Ruy Lopez until the position opened up and Grischuk managed to exploit several bad moves played by So in a row. A very instructive lesson on conversion and not backing down while you have the initiative, but rather building it until your oponent collapses.
