Since retiring, in 2005, Garry Kasparov. the legendary World Champion and 13th World Champion in chess history, has not been playing any tournament games. A few months ago, he played in his first rated tournament in twelve years, the St. Louis Rapid and Blitz. There was not only a large audience present, but also online.
The open question was how well Kasparov, now aged 54, could perform against today’s young chess giants like Caruana, Karjakin and Nakamura. Moreover, we also saw Anand taking on his arch-rival in the tournament again.
The whole chess world was curious of Garry Kasparov’s comeback. One of his key weaknesses in the tournament was his time management. He was taking minutes on standard moves that most top players would have spent seconds on. Today, our well-known commentator, IM Valeri Lilov, casts a backward glance at Garry’s comeback.
