White Repertoire against the Sicilian
The Sicilian Defense is an opening that causes a lot of headaches for many 1.e4-players. Should you try to learn all the main-lines against all of Black’s different setups? Should you go for some little-known sidelines which, however, do not promise any advantage if Black knows what he is doing? How to find a White Repertoire against the Sicilian?
Due to the fact that the Sicilian Defense is one of the most frequently played openings against 1.e4, White-players are forced to come up with an answer to these questions.
The good news, however, is that the young Dutch star Robin van Kampen is providing you with something all 1.e4-players need – a complete White repertoire against the Sicilian. In the first video series, the Rossolimo Sicilian, Robin already dealt extensively with the 2…Nc6 3.Bb5 system. In his second video series, he covers 2…d6, 2…e6, 2…g6 and the rarer moves 2…Nf6 and 2…a6.
After studying this series you should feel right at home in the positions arising out of the different lines covered, knowing both specific moves and the key plans that both sides are trying to implement. Together with the first series, you have a complete grandmaster-level repertoire against the Sicilian for White at your disposal in order to tackle the Sicilian with confidence!
Against all of Black options GM Robin van Kampen opts for comfortable positions for White which can be played for a win while not taking many risks.
Crush the Hyper Accelerated Dragon Setup with 2…g6
In this free preview video, GM Robin van Kampen takes a look at the move 2…g6. Now you could, of course, opt for a Maroczy structure by playing 3.c4 followed by d4. However, he recommends a different option – playing 3.d4 and retaking with the queen on d4. In the ensuing positions White often obtains comfortable positions with a slight advantage.
The game starts 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 g6 (Black usually plays this move in order to go for the Hyper Accelerated Dragon, avoiding the dangerous Yugoslav Attack and the lines after 2…Nc6 3.Bb5 in the normal Accelerated Dragon) 3.d4 (it looks like White plays a classical main-line against Black’s setup) 3…cxd4 4.Qxd4! (see the diagram on the right).
White is able to bring out his queen early against this setup. Black’s rook on h8 is hanging – 4…Nf6 (more or less forced). 5.Nc3 Nc6 6.Qa4 d6 (6…Bg7 is another option for Black but GM Robin van Kampen tells you how to successfully tackle this setup in the video).
It seems that Black stopped White from playing the move e4-e5, but White does it anyway – 7.e5 dxe5 8.Nxe5 (see the diagram on the left).
White puts pressure on Black’s knight on c6. Black has three moves at his disposal now – 8…Qd4 (which looks good, but isn’t, in fact), 8…Bg7 (an interesting pawn sacrifice) and 8…Bd7. After all three moves, GM Robin van Kampen proofs that White has at least a small edge.
After the main move 8…Bd7, for example, White can grab the bishop pair and confront Black with an unpleasant defensive task. 9.Nxd7 Qxd7 10.Be3 (White simply brings out his pieces to useful squares) Bg7 11.Rd1 Qg4 12.Qb3 (White does not want to trade queens) 0-0 13.h3 Qc8 14.Be2 a6 15.0-0 e6 (see the diagram on the right).
White has reached a comfortable position and definitely has a small plus. He can follow up by Na4-b6, c3 and improve his bishop by playing g3-Bf3-Bg2.
If you want to know a lot more ideas in this opening line a lot more detailed explanations, we advise you to watch the whole video.
