An Easy Equalizer Against 1.d4
Positional grinders like to play 1.d4 and crush you little by little, seemly without effort. It’s irritating when you must play thirty precise moves to get a slightly worse position. Do you want to stop suffering with the black pieces?
GM Jan Gustafsson suggest you an easy repertoire based on the Vienna in his course A repertoire against 1.d4. Part 2: The Vienna. This course is part of a bigger pack cointaining analysis against all White different options. The repertoire is based on the Vienna and the Nimzo-Indian, two solid options which also give good winning chances against any unprepared opponent.
In this free preview, Jan analyzes one of the most logical continuations for White. After the Vienna moves 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nf3 d5 4.Nc3 dxc4, White usually plays 5.e3 a6 6.a4. This is a very cautious variation, avoiding any opening theory and trying to prevent any active Black idea. This is the kind of variation that play the positional grinders!
GM Gustafsson suggests two good options against it. The most exact move is 6…c5, which transpose to a favorable version of the Queen’s Gambit Accepted. As the German GM shows, in the QGA White doesn’t develop his queen knight too early. So, in the Vienna, Black has a clear way to full equality. Black has no problems in this line, which is more than most of the defenses usually offer.
But, if you want to play for a win, then he also analysis other option. 6…b6 is a riskier alternative, as theorically it doesn’t promise full equality. It’s important to note, however, that if White chooses this line with 6.a4 he is probably playing for a draw. So, a more complicate variation like 6…b6 can be annoying for him. Psychology is an important part of the chess struggle!
