Judit Polgar’s Brillancy Against Shirov

GM Judit Polgar is well-known for her fierce attacking games. Her speciality was the Sicilian Defense, with both colors, as it gives the opportunity to brilliantly sacrifice material in order to win the initiative. And that is something Judit did very well!

Among many spectacular Judit’s wins, IM Anna Rudolf analyses one against GM Alexei Shirov. In this game, the hungarian player, with the black pieces, sacrifice two pawns to obtain good squares for her knights (!). Try to discover the first sacrifice in the next position:

Judit played 10…g5!, a typical Sicilian pawn-break to win the e5-square for the Nc6. But, in this position, this is a pawn sacrifice!

As in many sacrifices, the compensation is purely positional. But, with the tension growing, the tactics started soon. And Polgar was in her element

A few more moves, and then another pawn sacrifice, and then a queen sacrifice! Although, in this case, it wasn’t a real sacrifice, as the queen can be recovered instantly. But, the cutest moment was when Judit was intending a checkmate with her two knights! She really knew how to use her horses!
