Scandinavian’s Achilles’ Heel
In games between amateurs and club players, the Scandinavian Defense (1.e4 d5) is one of the most popular choices for players who want attacking possibilities and little opening theory. The Scandinavian allows Black to get his desire position without anti-Scandinavian variations (like against the Open Sicilian, which can be avoided in many ways).
With clear-cut plans and just a few variations to study, the Scandinavian seems a good option. So, how to play against it?
In this free video, IM Lawrence Trent analyses the Black’s most aggressive variation: 1.e4 d5 2.exd5 Nf6!?, sacrificing the d5-pawn (as it can now be defended with 3.c4). However, Trent shows an easy variation, avoiding all the complications you opponent want, and leaving White with a clear positional advantage.
Let’s look at one of the typical positions White get:
In the position of the diagram, White has a clear plus. He has more space (pawns on c4 and d4) and better minor pieces (the Nb6 is clearly a bad piece, without prospects).
He will surely put his rooks on the central files and then he can push in the center with d4-d5 or use his central advantage to start an attack on the kingside. On the other hand, Black has no clear plan!
With easy suggestions and clear plans, IM Lawrence Trent shows you how to play against this dangerous variation in only 13 minutes! Imagine yourself surprising your opponent and getting an easy advantage while he spends time searching what to do!
If you like this type of repertoire, and want to know how to play against the other Scandinavian main line (1.e4 d5 2.exd5 Qxd5), you should definitely check the course A Repertoire Against the Scandinavian, by IM Lawrence Trent, and destroy one of the most popular defenses.
