Kasparov vs Carlsen – Who Is Better?

“Carlsen is a force of nature”, Garry Kasparov

Continuing with the topic presented in the last video by FM Sebastián Fell, now it’s the turn of GM Damián Lemos to give his verdict: Who is the best chess player in the world? Kasparov or Carlsen?

GM Lemos has studied the games of both world champions deeply , he even played against Magnus Carlsen (and got a draw!), and has decided to show two of the most amazing games from each player.

Kasparov’s Immortal

The game he won against the Bulgarian GM (and future FIDE World Champion) Veselin Topalov is widely recognized as one of the most brilliant games of all time.

For that reason, every examination of Kasparov’s games should include this jewel.

Damian Lemos analyzes the spectacular combination in depth, explaining the ideas behind every move and showing the brilliant combinations that remained behind the curtains. The former World Champion displays all his famous tactical abilities!

In the following position, can you find the amazing move that White played? Kasparov

If you’re unfamiliar with the game, then it’s very difficult to find the move 24.Rxd4!!, that gave Black a real headache.

In fact, after 24…cxd4?, Black is lost! And no, Kasparov’s idea wasn’t to follow with 25.Qxd4+?, but with another curshing rook sacrifice, 25.Re7+!!

Young Carlsen’s Miniature

Before being the World Champion and the undisputed #1 in the world, Carlsen was a child prodigy that attracted the attention of all chess fans.

For example, on 2004, when only 14 years old, he already had an Elo of 2581!

GM Lemos analyses in detail one of his most brilliant – and lesser known – games of this year, against IM Ibrayev, in which he destroys his 2476 opponent in just 17 moves. Brutal!

Although he is better known now as a superb positional player, squeezing every opportunity until his opponents are suffocated, in his teenage years Magnus stood out as a great tactician, producing fascinating attacking games. Carlsen

In this position with opposite-side castling, Carlsen launched an attacking idea worth remembering, as it’s present in plenty of opening variations. With 12.Ng5! (threatening Bxf6 and mate on h7) 12…Re8 (to escape with the king through f8) 13.h4!, White got a powerful attack with his coordinated pieces around the kingside (Ng5, Bb2, Qc2 and Rh1!)

Black’s position, although defensible, is very difficult to play with the clock clicking, as he has to play lots of ‘only’ moves just not to lose.

In the end, Carlsen’s pressure was too much and Magnus won in just 4 moves – with a nice combination.

Conclusion

Although it’s very difficult to compare the play of two different players from two different periods, without doubt Kasparov and Carlsen are two of the best players in the rich history of chess.
