M Liem Le Quang (rated over 2700 Elo) is currently one of the world’s top 35 players. As he explains, it’s his understanding of different pawn structures that has helped him to achieve his most important goals in chess (including becoming a GM, winning the u14 World Championship in 2005 and the Blitz World Championship in 2013).

So when he decided to share his wisdom in his superb Master Method course, he was very keen to teach about the most important pawn structures.

In this free preview, he explains the subtleties of the Isolated Queen’s Pawn.Isolated Queen’s Pawn

This is undoubtedly THE structure that everybody should know. It arises from several, very different openings: the Queen’s Gambit Accepted, Queen’s Gambit Declined, Nimzo-Indian, Semi-Slav, Sicilian, French, and many more.

There are a lot of nuances that should be understood in Isolated Queen’s Pawn positions.

First, Black has the better pawn formation, with only two islands against three. That gives him better static prospects and, generally, a very good endgame.

But, White also has his pluses: the Isolated Queen’s Pawn gives him more space and control of the important c5 and e5 squares. This gives White better dynamic possibilities!

Isolated Queen’s PawnHere is a typical position of this structure, analyzed in detail in the video, and appears in a game between Kramnik and Anand.

White has brought his pieces to the kingside to create a strong attack. He has Qh4 in mind, with the threat of Bxf6 and Qxh7#. And if Black plays …h6, then Bxh6 is crushing. So Black simply developed with …Bb7, but then Kramnik unleashes a typical and devastating pawn advance: d4-d5! With this pawn break, Kramnik sacrifices his Isolated Queen’s Pawn but all his dynamic advantages accumulate into critical threats.

In this video, GM Le Quang clearly explains all the ideas that White and Black have in this important structure, giving you a big advantage over your next opponent.
