If you want to rapidly increase our rating you need to be winning games with both colors. Most people prefer to have the White pieces as they feel they can dictate play, start attacks and are more likely to win.
However, choose the right openings and you can create sharp, unbalanced positions which give you great chances of winning with Black too. Against 1.e4 the Sicilian Defense is the obvious choice. Against 1.d4 the stand-out opening is the King’s Indian Defense.
