Hanging pawns: two foot-soldiers standing side-by-side often found on the c and d-files. Some players love playing against them, seeing them as an easy target which, it’s true, they can become if not handled correctly.
However, in the hands of an enterprising player, hanging pawns become a force to be reckoned with. You get a space advantage thanks to the control of critical central squares, you can organize your pieces behind them and you can push one of the pawns forward at the right moment to spearhead an attack. Take control of the open files alongside them and you have a serious positional advantage.
Understanding how to play with hanging pawns is the subject of this video, a free preview of IM Sopiko Guramishvili’s Hanging Pawns Explained course.
Sopiko, also known as Miss Tactics and the wife of Anish Giri, demonstrates some highly instructive games including a classic battle between former World Champions Boris Spassky and Mikhail Tal.
First you’ll learn how your opponent will try to attack your hanging pawns and how to keep them safe. Then you’ll discover the many attacking opportunities they give you. By controlling space, the owner of the pawn duo has greater freedom to move his pieces into place, often doubling Rook on one of the open files. Then, when all pieces are ideally placed, one of the pawns will be pushed, creating an open game where the superior pieces dominate.
Spassky – Tal will give you more ideas to use in your games, including the pawn sacrifice for piece activity which, as Sopiko’s analysis shows, can lead to a devastating mating attack.
Whether you find yourself in positions playing with or against hanging pawns, watching this video will give you new weapons to fight for the win.
