The Trompowsky Attack (1.d4 Nf6 2.Bg5) is very popular at club/tournament level and does get played by GMs too. It has a number of things going for it:
it’s flexible
it forces players expecting 2.c4 to think early on
it immediately challenges Black’s first move
IM Lawrence Trent is a seasoned Trompowsky Attack player and presents the key ideas and important move orders in his near 5 hour course “Tricky Trompowsky”.
Despite its popularity, the Trompowsky will still come as a surprise to many 1…Nf6 players and so White should expect a wide variety of second move responses. This is the subject of this preview, Lawrence examines some of the more unusual replies, identifying the ideas behind them, pointing out their deficiencies and recommending a clear plan against them.
We look at 2…h6?!, 2…Nc6 (intending 3…e5), the quick Queenside fianchetto 2…b6, 2…c6 looking to bring the Queen to a5, and the solid 2…d6.
This preview serves as a great introduction to White’s possibilities with the Trompowsky Attack, check out the full course if you wish to add this opening to your repertoire.
