The Marshall Attack in the Spanish Opening/Ruy Lopez (1 e4 e5 2 Nf3 Nc6 3 Bb5 a6 4 Ba4 Nf6 5 O-O Be7 6 Re1 b5 7 Bb3 O-O 8 c3 d5) is a fantastic attacking variation devised by the American Frank Marshall. It is claimed that Marshall held on to this opening discovery for 9 years before springing it on Jose Raul Capablanca.

That the Cuban genius won the encounter in no way diminishes the effectiveness of the Marshall Attack. It speaks volumes that Garry Kasparov never allowed the Marshall Attack to be played against him, always deviating early. If you know the theory better than your opponent you are guaranteed to scare the life out of them!

GM Jan Gustafsson shows how the Marshall Attack is being played today in his course “Latest trends in the Marshall“.

In this preview, Jan looks at what has become the main choice for White at the top-level 9.exd5 Nxd5 10.Nxe5 Nxe5 11.Rxe5 c6 and now 12.d3 instead of 12.d4. Why would White play this more timid move? There is a subtle reason behind the selection which Black must be aware of. Jan reveals this and how to counter the idea in this video.
