Magnus Carlsen has more or less monopolized the attention of the chess world over the last 5 years. On the 1st Jan 2010 he became the youngest player in chess history to become ranked World #1. Then he smashed Garry Kasparov’s record elo rating of 2851 (Magnus’ peak rating at the time of writing: 2882) before challenging and defeating Indian legend Viswanathan Anand for the title of World Chess Champion in 2013.
With clear superiority over his rivals it looked for a while like no-one would be able to challenge his dominance. Then came the supernova-like emergence of the Italian-American Fabiano Caruana who went from competing in Opens to rubbing shoulders with the world’s elite – and beating them.
Caruana’s professional approach opposes Carlsen’s laid-back nature and, after several impressive victories over the Norwegian, it became clear chess had a new great rivalry: Carlsen vs Caruana.
