One of the most frustrating things in chess is when you know you have a winning position but just cannot find the killer blow. Everything appears to be defended so, with no obvious way forward, you end up releasing the tension by either moving an attacking piece away or trading down into an endgame.

In his course “Finding Tactical Solutions in Overwhelming Positions”, GM Roman Dzindzichashvili looks at many great attacking games decided by chess tactics. As well as showing how the superior position was obtained, Roman points out the key elements of the position that indicate tactical possibilities.

Once we know there is a combination nearby we have to find it and Dzindzi talks us through the exact thinking process that helps us to do that.

In this preview, Roman looks at 2 classic games. The first is Petrosian – Spassky from their first World Championship match in 1966. Petrosian squeezes the position until he has more space and Spassky has an offside piece. Then comes an exchange sacrifice to secure a key square and finally the killer combination.

The second game is between Anatoly Karpov and Veselin Topalov. In what looks like an equal position, Karpov is aware of positional characteristics that give a tactical shot. Roman explains the thinking method that leads to the brilliant solution.

Enjoy the preview and check out the complete course if you want to improve your chess tactics.
