We’ve all seen beginners play chess and try to get a quick checkmate with 1.e4 followed by 2.Bc4 and 3.Qf3/Qh5 and it’s clear to us why this approach wouldn’t work against an experienced player. We know that successful chess attacks require either more attackers than defenders or better coordination between the attackers than between the defenders.

Mastering the art of attack takes a lot of careful study of the greatest attackers, players like Kasparov, Alekhine and Tal. Practising tactics is a great help but it is not enough on its own. As Rudolf Spielmann once said “I can see the combinations as well as Alekhine, but I cannot get into the same positions.”

GM Roman Dzindzichashvili reveals the secret to successful chess attacks in his course “Building Powerful Attacks by Learning Piece Coordination“. By creating constant threats, even just threatening to get a tiny positional advantage, the great attackers force their opponents to respond. These responses slowly break up the defender’s piece coordination whilst the attacker remains mobile.

In this preview, we see the great Garry Kasparov pile on the pressure against his opponent Petursson in a Slav Defense. With natural moves Kasparov continually creates threats and eventually forces Black to tie his own Rook down to the defense of a pawn. Kasparov then proceeds to demonstrate how superior piece quality is the same as material advantage in a very instructive attack.

Enjoy the preview and check out the full course to learn more about winning chess attacks.
