Chess middlegames demand a lot of from the player. We have to be aware of positional elements, as well as tactics and often have to switch between playing defensive, strategic or attacking chess. Mastering the middlegame requires extensive knowledge of scores of patterns, themes and techniques.

To help you master the most important middlegame themes, the ones that occur most often and will actually win you games, GM Damian Lemos has produced “Mastering the Middlegame”, a DVD explaining the concepts in details as he analyzes 4 instructive games, including a great win by Judit Polgar.

In this preview Damian talks about attacking chess, analyzing and explaining a game from the Russian Championships.

From the start of the game, White finds the moves that put the most pressure on his opponent, making it difficult for him to develop properly without losing material or having his pawn structure ruined.

Each move creates a threat, meaning Black simply doesn’t have time to castle, a fact that White takes full advantage of.

This game is a great example of how powerfully placed pieces and forceful moves can lead to quick wins. See if you can spot the surprise sacrifice before it is played!
