Defending is not about passive play and holding on for the draw. Successful defending involves staying safe whilst encouraging the attacker to either give you material or make positional mistakes. Then, when the attack has run out of steam, the defender takes the initiative and wins with their advantage!

There are many psychological edges for the defender if they remain calm, know how to deal with threats and what their general strategy should be. The attacker feels like they have to continue attacking, even if it’s not working. This leads to mistakes.

The problem most defenders have is they play passively when they should be active and they take too many risks when they should play solidly.

To help you understand the right approach to the art of defense, GM Damian Lemos has recorded the DVD “Dominant Defense” in which he explains how the best Grandmasters, including Yusupov, Anand and Topalov, make defensive decisions that win games.

In this preview, we see a game between Illescas Cordoba and Vishy Anand from 1997. Right from the opening, the center is opened and White aims his pieces at the Kingside. Anand calmly positions his pieces on open lines and allows Illescas Cordoba to sacrifice first a pawn then a piece to get close to his King.

As the attack intensifies, Anand gathers more material. With checkmate seemingly looming, Anand produces a brilliant move that shows that defending can be just as spectacular as attacking.

Enjoy this fantastic game and check out “Dominant Defense”!
