The Scandinavian Defense (1. e4 d5) is a great way of immediately challenging White’s center and has been proven to be perfectly sound. There is no need for the preparatory …c6/…e6 moves of the Caro-Kann and French Defenses as Black can get a good game after either 2.exd5 Qxd5 or 2.exd5 Nf6.

Grandmaster Roman Dzindzichashvili’s course “New Lines against the Pirc, Scandinavian & Dragon” brings you right up to date with modern theory on the Scandinavian Defense as well as the Pirc and Dragon.

In this free preview, Roman points out a tricky 3rd move by White that has gained popularity recently, 1.e4 d5 2.exd5 Nf6 3.Bb5+.

The idea of this move is to misplace Black’s Bishop which wants to go to g4 to harass and hinder an eventual Nf3. After the Bishop check, Black blocks with 3…Bd7 and White simply plays his Bishop back with 4.Be2.

Now Black’s Bishop cannot go to g4 and it blocks the Queen’s sight of d5, denying the Knight support later on. So how should Black deal with this line?

Roman points out the problems with a quick Kingside fianchetto and castling and goes on to show exactly how he responds to this variation, including how to punish some easy-to-make mistakes by White.

Enjoy the preview and remember to check out the full course!
