Control the center from afar!
In the video “English Defence” by GM James Plaskett, we are shown a Black opening that arises after the moves 1.c4 b6 or 1.d4 e6 2.c4 b6.
This opening revolves around the struggle for the central square, e4, with White trying to place a pawn there and defend it while Black develops his pieces in order to control the square from afar. It was popularized in the 1970s with the foremost user being GM Tony Miles.
At the start of the video, James shows us a few of the different main lines that will be discussed throughout the video, including lines where Black trades off his fianchettoed bishop for the knight on f3 and other lines where he uses his f-pawn to attack White’s center.
How can Black fight for control of the center using this opening? In what ways can he attack White’s center and create weaknesses? Watch the video to find out!
