In the video “Easy Way to Beat The Pirc Modern Defense” by GM Roman Dzindzichashvili, we see a way to set-up our pieces when Black plays the Pirc Modern Defense. With this set-up, we achieve a strong position that has many ways to cause Black problems. Even if Black plays solidly and doesn’t make any mistakes, White is able to get a small but clear advantage with the piece set-up that we are shown.
The set-up for this opening starts with e4, d4, Nf3, Nc3, h3 and Be3. Playing in this way allows for both a positional and tactical style of play. This is a very good situation for openings, because it allows the specific player to customize the opening to whichever playing style he prefers.
In what ways can White play both tactically and positionally? How does he achieve a strong, centralized position in many of the variations? Watch the video to find out!
