In the video “Grand Prix and Reti” by GM Roman Dzindzichashvili, we see an explanation of how White can play the Grand Prix opening in a positional style much different from the normal attacking style that most are used to seeing with this opening.
White begins by trading his light square bishop for Black’s knight and doubling Black’s c-pawns. Next, we see how White can attack this pawn structure weakness and how it blocks in Black’s light square bishop for much of the game.
In a different variation that we are shown, White is able to make use of a weak square in Black’s territory and possibly use it as an outpost for his knight. The ideas in many of these variations can transpose and be used in different types of positions.
How can White switch from thinking in an attacking way to a positional way? In what ways can this surprise Black? What are the key moves for White to know when playing this opening positionally? Watch the video to find out!
