In the video “Blackmar-Diemer Gambit” by IM Andrew Martin, we are shown the highly aggressive gambit opening that many players live and “die-mer” by.
The opening starts off innocently enough with 1.d4 d5, but then takes a swift turn with the pawn sacrifice 2.e4 dxe4 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.f3. If you want to steer the game into a funky, aggressive, attacking direction then this opening is for you.
After showing the basic set-up for the gambit, Andrew looks at a few ways that Black can play after continuing to capture pawns with 4… exf3. This is followed by looking at some of the ideas White and Black can play if the e4 pawn is defended, instead of capturing again. Many of the opening ideas for White here involve using his quick piece mobility and open lines in order to attack the opponent’s king very quickly.
How strong can White develop an attack if Black is not careful? What ways can Black try to defend, but still get into a lot of trouble? Watch the video to find out!
