Learn From Your Fellow Amateurs 4 – NM Dana Mackenzie, from the ChessLecture series.

The game studied here features two amateurs playing the Petroff’s Defense, and the classic opening trap involving the ‘discovered check’ winning the Black queen is initially examined. The lecture is highly instructive, and despite being targeted toward beginners, even stronger players will gain insight to the amateur mind’s thought processes and a common feature for beginners: a lack of regard for a single tempo.

A lack of commitment to a plan is another example of instructive flawed thinking examined here. The fact that you cannot get mate with a knight on f8 is explained, as are the disadvantages of playing actively when defensive moves are called for.
