Topalov — Anand 2010 World Chess Championship — Dennis Monokroussos

FM Dennis looks at Game 8 of The Anand — Topalov World Championship Match match with Anand leading by 4 games to 3.

Just as in games 3 and 5 The Slav Opening was played with Topalov choosing 5.a4 Bf5 6.Ne5 e6 7.f3 c5. Dennis talks about theoretical opinions of the opening variation before examining the main pre-endgame and the connected difficulties that Black has in activating ‘his main problem piece’ and as a consequence this allows White to have the pressure.

Black tries to weather the storm and gain the draw by activating his Passive ‘Bishop Pair’, White tries to use the extra lead in development to prevent this, and does so, but increases drawing chances in the process and a drawn ‘Opposite Color Bishop’ ending results.
